Prestasi olahraga di Sumatera Selatan mengalami penurunan pada perhelatan PON 2016 di Jawa Barat yang menempati posisi 21, dari 12 cabang olahraga hanya 3 cabang olahraga yang mendapat medali emas yaitu atletik, anggar dan menembak, olahraga modern lebih dominan dibandingkan olahraga menurut sosial budaya. masyarakat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi perkembangan atlet unggulan sebagai cerminan olahraga budaya di Sumatera Selatan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif atau metode penelitian naturalistik karena penelitian dilakukan pada kondisi alam dengan desain penelitian survey dengan teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan triangulasi data. Program pembinaan atlet unggulan sebagai cerminan olahraga budaya Sumsel dapat disimpulkan sebagai berikut bahwa dalam menerima atlet dan pelatih ada beberapa syarat yang ditetapkan oleh pengurus KONI Sumsel yaitu: (1) memiliki izin kepelatihan, (2) memiliki pengalaman sebagai pelatih, dan memiliki prestasi. Sementara itu, sistem rekrutmen sebagai atlet dalam program pembinaan atlet unggulan Sriwijaya 2020 harus memiliki prestasi kejuaraan nasional untuk masuk ke program Sriwjaya 2020 dan mereka yang mendapatkan medali emas, perak, dan perunggu pada PON Jabar 2016 langsung dibina KONI untuk masuk ke ajang tersebut. program.
