Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of sacrifice in the drama al-Juththah al-Mutawwaqah by Kateb Yacine through Lucien Goldmann’s Genetic Structuralism approach. The research highlights the relationship between the text’s structure and the social consciousness of the Algerian nation during the colonial period. It employs a descriptive-qualitative method with textual analysis based on Goldmann’s five main concepts: human facts, collective subject, worldview, literary structuration, and dialectics of understanding–explanation. The findings show that sacrifice in this drama is not merely an individual tragedy but a form of collective awareness born from social suffering. Characters such as al-Akhdar, Mustafa, and Najmah represent humanity’s struggle to find meaning in life through pain and solidarity. Yacine’s dramatic structure presents a dialectic between death and resurrection, destruction and rebirth. Thus, this work reflects a revolutionary worldview asserting that suffering is a means toward freedom and true humanity.
