Abstract
This research examines how the identity of the father’s masculinity is represented in the novel Seribu Wajah Ayah by Nurunala through the perspective of R.W.’s gender theory. Connell. Using the analytical descriptive qualitative method, this study focusses on the analysis of the aspects of the characters, dialogues, and storylines that contain elements of masculinity. Data is collected through reading techniques and categorised into three main typologies: hegemonic, subordinate and marginal masculinity. Research findings reveal that the father’s identity in the narrative is not single but multidimensional. The father figure is shown through a contradiction between the dominant authority in self-control (hegemonic), the points of emotional vulnerability that trigger fragility (subordinate), to the adaptation of domestic roles due to the pressure of the situation (marginal). This novel also shows a shift towards caring masculinity, in this case the father’s masculine identity becomes more flexible and affective through a spiritual approach and emorional closeness. This research emphasises that contemporary literature successfully represents a more humanistic father’s face in Indonesia’s social dynamics today.
