Artificial Intelligence

(KEBIJAKAN KECERDASAN BUATAN)

Environmental Science Journal (ESJO) recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI tools, may be used as an auxiliary tool in the preparation, analysis, and publication of scientific manuscripts. ESJO permits the responsible use of AI provided that it supports, rather than replaces, human intellectual contributions, scientific judgment, and accountability.

This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, and other parties involved in the journal's publication process. The use of AI must comply with the principles of academic integrity, transparency, confidentiality, and responsible scholarly publishing.

1. Authors

Authors may use AI tools for appropriate purposes, including:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, language, and writing style.
  • Translation and language assistance.
  • Organizing ideas and improving manuscript structure.
  • Summarizing or simplifying text.
  • Assisting with programming, data processing, data visualization, or statistical analysis, provided that all outputs are independently verified.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scientific validity of their manuscripts, including any content generated or assisted by AI.

Authors must not use AI to fabricate or falsify research data, generate fictitious references or citations, produce misleading scientific claims or conclusions, manipulate research results, or engage in any other form of publication misconduct.

AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the content, integrity, or accountability of a scientific publication.

When AI has been used substantially in preparing a manuscript, conducting research, or analyzing research data, authors must disclose its use in an appropriate section of the manuscript, such as the Acknowledgments or Methods section, depending on the nature of the use. The disclosure should identify the AI tool used and explain its purpose. Authors remain responsible for verifying all AI-assisted content.

Routine language correction, spelling checks, and basic grammar assistance may not require disclosure unless otherwise specified in the journal's author guidelines.

2. Reviewers

Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of manuscripts and all information obtained during the peer-review process.

Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts, unpublished research data, figures, tables, supplementary materials, or other confidential information to public AI platforms or AI services that do not adequately protect confidentiality.

AI tools must not replace the reviewer's independent scientific judgment or be used to generate peer-review reports without appropriate human assessment and verification. Reviewers remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, fairness, and professionalism of their evaluations, comments, and recommendations.

Any use of AI by reviewers must comply with the journal's confidentiality requirements and applicable editorial policies.

3. Editors

Editors may use AI tools for limited administrative, language-support, or other appropriate editorial assistance, provided that such use does not compromise confidentiality, fairness, or editorial independence.

Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential reviewer reports, author information, reviewer identities, or other confidential editorial materials to AI platforms that do not ensure adequate data protection.

AI must not independently determine manuscript acceptance, rejection, or other editorial decisions. All editorial decisions must be based on the manuscript's scientific quality, originality, relevance to the journal's scope, reviewer feedback, and compliance with publication ethics.

Editors remain fully responsible for editorial decisions and for maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the publication process.

4. Research Data and Scientific Integrity

The use of AI in environmental science research must not compromise the reliability, traceability, or reproducibility of research findings.

Authors must ensure that AI-assisted data processing, statistical analysis, modeling, or visualization is scientifically appropriate and that the results can be verified. AI-generated data, references, interpretations, or research findings must not be presented as genuine research evidence without appropriate validation.

Authors must accurately report research methods and disclose the use of AI when it materially affects data analysis, interpretation, or the research process. AI must not be used to misrepresent field observations, laboratory measurements, environmental monitoring results, or other empirical evidence.

5. Responsibility and Accountability

The use of AI does not transfer responsibility for a scientific work to an AI system. Authors, reviewers, and editors remain responsible for the content, accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and ethical conduct of their respective activities.

Authors are responsible for checking the validity of AI-generated information, verifying references and citations, respecting intellectual property rights, and ensuring that the submitted manuscript complies with applicable ethical standards.

AI systems cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the originality, integrity, and accountability of scientific work.

6. Ethical Compliance and Policy Enforcement

ESJO reserves the right to request clarification or additional information regarding the use of AI when necessary to assess a manuscript's originality, accuracy, or compliance with publication ethics.

Undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI that violates this policy may be considered during editorial evaluation. Where a potential violation is identified, the journal will assess the available evidence and provide the relevant parties with an opportunity to clarify the circumstances, where appropriate.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, possible actions may include requesting revisions or disclosure, rejecting a manuscript, publishing a correction, or taking other appropriate measures in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

7. Commitment to Responsible AI Use

Environmental Science Journal (ESJO) supports the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI in scholarly publishing. This policy aims to encourage the appropriate use of emerging technologies while safeguarding academic integrity, scientific reliability, confidentiality, and human accountability.

ESJO may periodically review and update this policy to reflect developments in AI technology, scholarly publishing standards, and relevant ethical guidelines.
