ELTE Journal (English Language Teaching and Education) is committed to maintaining academic integrity, transparency, fairness, and accountability in scholarly publishing. Authorship must reflect substantial intellectual contributions to the research and the preparation of the manuscript. The journal adopts the following criteria to ensure that authorship is assigned appropriately and that all contributors receive proper recognition.
1. Criteria for Authorship
To qualify for authorship, each individual must meet all four of the following criteria:
Substantial Contribution: Make a significant contribution to the conception or design of the study, the development of the research framework, data collection, data analysis, interpretation of findings, or other essential aspects of the research.
Writing and Intellectual Revision: Participate in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content, including the theoretical framework, research methodology, analysis, discussion, or interpretation of findings.
Final Approval: Review and approve the final version of the manuscript before it is submitted for publication.
Accountability: Agree to be accountable for their contributions and to cooperate in addressing any questions concerning the accuracy, integrity, or validity of the research and manuscript.
All individuals who meet these criteria should be recognized as authors. Individuals who make substantial contributions to the research should be given the opportunity to participate in the manuscript preparation, critical revision, and final approval process.
2. Contributions That Do Not Qualify for Authorship
Individuals who do not meet all the authorship criteria should not be listed as authors. Contributions that alone are insufficient to establish authorship include:
Providing funding or financial support without substantial intellectual involvement.
Holding a senior academic, institutional, or supervisory position.
Providing administrative assistance or general project coordination.
Conducting routine technical tasks, data entry, or transcription without significant intellectual contribution.
Providing proofreading, language editing, translation, or manuscript formatting without contributing to the intellectual content of the work.
Individuals who have made relevant contributions but do not qualify for authorship may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section, with their permission.
3. Responsibilities of Authors
All authors are responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of the submitted manuscript. Authors must:
Ensure that the research is original and accurately reported.
Provide appropriate citations and acknowledge the work of other researchers.
Ensure that all listed authors have made legitimate contributions to the research.
Confirm that all co-authors have reviewed and approved the final manuscript.
Agree on the order of authorship before submission.
Disclose relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding.
Ensure that the manuscript is not under consideration by another journal at the same time.
Cooperate with the editorial team in resolving questions concerning authorship, research integrity, or the accuracy of the manuscript.
4. Corresponding Author
The corresponding author is responsible for communicating with the editorial office throughout the submission, peer-review, revision, and publication processes. The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors' names, affiliations, contact details, and contributions are accurately provided during submission.
The corresponding author must also confirm that all authors have approved the submitted manuscript and agreed to its submission to ELTE Journal.
5. Changes in Authorship
Any request to add, remove, or rearrange authors after manuscript submission must be submitted in writing to the editorial office, accompanied by a clear explanation and confirmation from all authors concerned. Such changes are subject to the approval of the editor and must comply with applicable publication ethics guidelines.
Requests for changes in authorship after acceptance or publication will be evaluated carefully to protect the integrity of the scholarly record.
6. Author Contributions and Acknowledgments
Authors are encouraged to provide a clear statement describing each author's contribution to the research and manuscript preparation. Contributions should be reported accurately and transparently.
Individuals who have assisted with the research but do not meet the authorship criteria should be recognized in the Acknowledgments section, where appropriate and with their consent.
7. Ethical Compliance
ELTE Journal does not permit guest, gift, honorary, or ghost authorship. Every listed author must have made a legitimate scholarly contribution and must accept responsibility for the work. The journal may request additional information or clarification when authorship concerns arise.
By submitting a manuscript to ELTE Journal, the corresponding author confirms, on behalf of all co-authors, that the authorship information is accurate, all authors have approved the final manuscript, and the submission complies with the journal's authorship and publication ethics requirements.
This policy is informed by established international publication ethics principles, including guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
